Pic de Bugarach: French commune home to 20,000 ‘doomsday cultists’ awaiting alien salvation
An estimated 20,000 New Age believers who say the “upside down” mountain is home to aliens who will rescue them from an impending apocalypse have saturated a small French commune near the foot of the picturesque Pic de Bugarach.
The Independent reports the growing flock, who locals refer to as “esoterics,” believe the world will come to an end on December 21st, 2012. They also reportedly believe that the unique mountain is in fact home to a race of alien beings that will emerge to rescue the gathered humans and transport them to a new civilization.
Pic de Bugarach has long been famous because rock samples taken from its peak are actually older than points measured at lower elevation. Scientists say that is because when the 1,230 meter mountain erupted its peak flipped upside down before crashing back down upon the mountain’s base. The mountain is said to have played a role in inspiring everything from Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” to Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
The BBC reports that the French government is concerned about mass suicides taking place near Pic de Bugarach in advance of the December 21 date and that there have been reports of “strange rituals” taking place there as well.

This morning before rush hour, teams of activists, many from Occupy Wall Street, in conjunction with rank and file workers from the Transport Workers Union Local 100 and the Amalgamated Transit Union, opened up more than 20 stations across the city for free entry. As of 10:30 AM, the majority remain open. No property was damaged. Teams have chained open service gates and taped up turnstiles in a coordinated response to escalating service cuts, fare hikes, racist policing, assaults on transit workers’ working conditions and livelihoods — and the profiteering of the super-rich by way of a system they’ve rigged in their favor.

Ireland wasn’t the first country to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a parade and, up until 1970, pubs across Ireland closed their doors as a mark of respect for this religious occasion! It was, in fact, colonial New York City that hosted the first official St Patrick’s Day parade back in 1762, when Irish immigrants in the British colonial army marched down the city streets to St Patrick’s Cathedral. Petition: Urge President Obama to use his authority to prevent chemical disasters
The bulk use and storage of poison gases like chlorine at chemical facilities and wastewater and drinking water plants puts millions of Americans at risk of a Bhopal magnitude chemical disaster. Just 300 of these plants put a third of Americans at risk. But some communities no longer face these risks because they switched to safer chemical processes. For example, Washington, DC converted their waste water treatment plant 90 days after the 9/11 attacks. Before 9/11 their use of chlorine gas put 1.7 million people at risk.
President Obama’s Department of Homeland Security and Environmental Protection Agency have consistently asked Congress for the authority to remove these risks by requiring the use of safer chemical processes where feasible. Unfortunately, Republicans in Congress have blocked these efforts. President Obama can implement authority under the Clean Air Act to require companies to design and operate their facilities in a way that prevents the catastrophic release of poison gasses.

SEA TURTLES
Sea turtles are known for the amazing migrations they make, swimming long ocean distances to return to their birthplace to hatch their young.
Yet it turns out these beloved marine reptiles make another migration earlier in life that one researcher has described as “even more amazing” than the migrations the turtles make as adults.
“They only do it one time, but [the migration] can be much longer than the reproductive migrations they do as adults, and may involve tens of thousands of kilometers,” said Peter Meylan, a professor of natural sciences at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in a statement.
Meylan, along with his research partner and wife Ann Meylan, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, recently summarized years of sea turtle tracking data in a paper published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History.
They found that young sea turtles travel extremely long distances before they’re fully grown.
Green turtles hatched in Costa Rica were tracked to far-flung spots — Barbados, North Carolina and Bermuda — before heading off to spend their adulthoods near Nicaragua.
“Bermuda is a place where young turtles go to grow up,” Meylan said. “They arrive there after living out in the ocean. In Bermuda waters they grow from about the size of a dinner plate to the size of a wash tub, and then move on to different, adult habitats,” he said.
The researchers concluded that the tagging data from the study suggest that these adolescent migrations can be a dangerous time for the young turtles, and that the ocean corridors they travel could need official protections.
Some ocean turtle species, such as the world’s largest turtle, the colossal leatherback, are critically endangered.

The 72-year-old’s net worth fell $478.4 million in a day to $68.5 billion as of the close of markets on March 2, as U.S. moguls Bill Gates and Warren Buffett placed second and third on the list compiled by Bloomberg News. Brazil’s Eike Batista, who ranks 10th, still covets the top spot after vowing a year ago that he’d become the world’s wealthiest man by 2015.

Plan on visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island via ferry next year? If so, pay close attention to the vessel you board, as it just might be the world’s first to rely on hydrogen, solar and wind power for motorization. Currently, the New York Hornblower Hybrid (not to be confused with the San Francisco Hornblower Hybrid) is under construction in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and if all goes well, it’ll reach completion in April. The 600-passenger boat be equipped with Tier 2 diesel engines, hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels and wind turbines, with power coming from a proton exchange membrane fuel cell that turns hydrogen into electricity. We’re told that the diesel rigs will only kick in to cover “additional energy needs,” but it’s hard to say how often they’ll actually be used. The eventual goal, however, is to do away with emissions altogether in the ferry process, and it seems that the technology is already capable of being scaled for use in other hybrid ferries, hybrid yachts and even hybrid tugs.

New Antarctic Ocean Alliance to blaze trail for marine reserves

2012 is the year by which the world’s governments should have committed to a global network of marine protected areas. The shocking thing is that for all the fine words, currently our oceans are unprotected: only a mere 5.9percent of national waters and just 0.5percent of international waters are set aside as off-limits to destructive fishing, energy exploration and other industrial threats, leaving the vast majority open to plunder. While it may not be the end of the world just yet, scientists from the Census of Marine Life and IPSO have been warning us that the oceans and the wonderful array of marine life they hold cannot withstand our pressures forever.
In order to address this sad state of affairs, Greenpeace has drawn up an Emergency Oceans Rescue Plan and is campaigning to ensure the world’s governments live up to their promises and put in place the steps to create a global network of marine reserves. While the Arctic Ocean and some other areas of the high seas totally lack any means by which to establish marine reserves and protect marine life there is one area where efforts are being made to provide adequate protection – the Southern Ocean.

The protest follows an announcement from Greenpeace Executive Director Phil Radford that the organization has opened a campaign against Duke Energy, and a dramatic protest on top of the 400-foot stack of an Asheville coal plant.. Earlier, Greenpeace flew an airship over Cincinnati with the message “Dump Duke.” In Cincinnati, residents are deciding whether to keep buying energy from Duke, or explore cleaner alternatives.

GREENPEACE: Blogpost by Phil Radford shows that Keystone XL pipeline jobs are false. TransCanada has already bit back at our complaint, insinuating that Greenpeace doesn’t know anything about pipelines. Perhaps TransCanada can explain why its existing Keystone pipeline leaked 14 times in less than 18 months when it anticipated a rate of 1.4 leaks per decade — check out this infographic for descriptions of the first twelve leaks. Nebraska’s ecologically sensitive Sandhills region and the Ogallala aquifer cannot be subject to TransCanada’s insufficient pipeline safety standards, especially when that pipeline carries corrosive tar sands for almost 2,000 miles. And with well over 1,000 miles of pipeline proposed in our country, it’s alarming that as little as 50 people may be employed to monitor and maintain it, as Cornell’s Global Labor Institute suggests.
