Trainees tonight! A couple guys from the What Doth Life rock-n-roller co-op collective thing up there Windsor way. www.whatdothlife.com

They hung me by my undies on a peg on the wall and hijacked the show. I don’t have a playlist to share. Thanks to Julio for helping me down after they left.

Tune in next week – it’s their last training day.

Patriots: Who gets the last laugh? Even though the Patriots lost this years Super Bowl, know one can say the they didn’t put on a great show. If you watched, you couldn’t have missed the “Hail Mary” Brady threw in the Pats last play. If not check the recap. Also, I guess Brady’s Wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen knows how to talk football, “My husband cannot f—ing throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time.

GREENPEACE: Blogpost by Phil Radford shows that Keystone XL pipeline jobs are false. TransCanada has already bit back at our complaint, insinuating that Greenpeace doesn’t know anything about pipelines. Perhaps TransCanada can explain why its existing Keystone pipeline leaked 14 times in less than 18 months when it anticipated a rate of 1.4 leaks per decade — check out this infographic for descriptions of the first twelve leaks. Nebraska’s ecologically sensitive Sandhills region and the Ogallala aquifer cannot be subject to TransCanada’s insufficient pipeline safety standards, especially when that pipeline carries corrosive tar sands for almost 2,000 miles. And with well over 1,000 miles of pipeline proposed in our country, it’s alarming that as little as 50 people may be employed to monitor and maintain it, as Cornell’s Global Labor Institute suggests.

Why do people donate so much money to candidates?
Because they own businesses that campaigns will spend the money on!

Pretty Big Place Playlist for 2/8/2012

February 8th, 2012 by Pretty Big Place

I went into the cassette vault looking for something that I never did find. But I emerged (gasping for breath) with a handful of my favorite demos and DIY releases from some Minnesota and Wisconsin bands from the heyday of the late ’80s and early ’90s. I didn’t have anything to do with making these recordings; I just like ‘em. Read the rest of this entry »

Pretty Big Place Video Hour: Drinking Milk Episode

February 2nd, 2012 by Pretty Big Place

A new episode of the The Pretty Big Place Video Hour — the monthly TV version of my radio show — is up at FACT-TV. It got stretched to widescreen, as mysteriously happens sometimes. Just adds to the fun.

Pretty Big Place Playlist for 2/1/2012

February 1st, 2012 by Pretty Big Place

Tonight we stole a page from the playbook of the Mixtape Radio show (hosted by Jade Barbee on Tuesdays from 9-11 ET) and played stuff supplied by a couple members of the army of six weird listeners: Rodney and Megan, who both happen to live in Minnesota. Delightfully good! Next week – if there aren’t trainees – I’ve got some great ones lined up courtesy of Jeremy. Anybody else want in? Read the rest of this entry »

Pretty Big Place Playlist for 1/25/2012

January 25th, 2012 by Pretty Big Place

Complementing the army of six weird listeners tonight were a couple unexpected studio drop-ins: Paul Clipper from the We Call It Music blues show (Tuesdays 4-6) and Mark Kenney from the crazed Ear Bisque show (Fridays 8-10). And they overlapped Julio Razquin of Lost Marbles (the show right after mine) with his in-studio guest Clint Pecor of Dethavesk getting ready for their interview. Five people in the studio. Gotta say, it was a pretty good time in there. Maybe not great radio, but I’m sure it at least had a… vibe or something. Read the rest of this entry »

HOW TO SLAY A GIANT part 1
I must say the Patriots know how to put on a great show. The best part of the game was Steven Tyler singing the National Anthem. It gave me and I hope you, sense of what freedom and Independence is about. Too bad San Francisco didn’t win the NFC title. They have the next much needed ingredient, love. I guess before I watch the grudge match I should watch “Jack The Giant Killer” several times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1opzWmr8NSU

Pretty Big Place Playlist for 1/18/2012

January 18th, 2012 by Pretty Big Place

The trivia question answer was Christopher Cross. There was no Eric Burdan & War tonight – never has been. You forgot the color film. I pronounced all the words right. Salami understood all the words. Lois was dancing with the cat. Tom wept. Scoot was in the shadows. Beth still holds the record, probably always will. Ray and Freddie and Adam swooped in and out like owly ghosts. Megan and Dank were engaged, not to each other, and that’s OK. Paul appeared: bip! boop! Wayne likes us.

Pretty Big Place Playlist for 1/11/2012

January 11th, 2012 by Pretty Big Place

A delightful show tonight with much music! I was up against the big Cider Awards at the Opera House here in Bellows Falls, but we persevered and had a grand time anyway. Plus, we prevented Megan’s face from falling off. That’s worth something. To Megan at least.

Nobody guessed the trivia question.

I Killed A Cat

January 7th, 2012 by Gary Smith

I killed a cat last night.

It was hunkered down in the middle of the road, not in that pose that cats strike when they’re going to pounce, not lying stretched out like a cat in a sunny window.  It was hunkered down the way I assume a suicide bomber might wait alongside a dusty highway in Kandahar; resolute, steeled to what was next, at peace with the finality of a decision. Pretty Big Place (and Lost Marbles) Playlist for 1/4/2012

January 4th, 2012 by Pretty Big Place

Sometimes you gotta be away from a thing to realize just how much you like it. Great to be back after a couple weeks away! Thanks to Dank Stan for filling in for me, to Julio for facilitating it, and to Dickie for letting us get away with it. I hope everyone had some great holidays, and has a most excellent new year coming up.

Ended up doing back-to-back shows when Julio couldn’t make it in for Lost Marbles. A delightful surprise to have Paul Clipper show up – he’s the host of the best blues show around, and he played us some atypical psychedelic tracks from his collection – on actual vinyl. Whoo!
